Hurricane Sandy Storm Recovery Update: Nov 7, 2012 08:00hrs

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy the volunteers of the Fire Company has made good progress on it's two core objectives:
  • - Operational Readiness
  • - Helping the Village prepare for the eventual restoration of electrical service to homes by securing propane tanks, particularly the 100 pound cylinders that are the energy source for many homes.
Operational Readiness:
We are in coordination with Fire Island Area Command, which is the Incident Command center for all of Fire Island.  Our vehicles have all returned to the community.  It should be noted that the availability of sufficient water to suppress a fire and the condition of some walks displaced by flooding contribute to an environment severely impacting our readiness for both Fire and EMS response.
Propane Tanks:
Your volunteers have worked hard to locate, shut off and secure many 100 pound tanks, some found under homes and walks.  We have made significant progress in this dirty and hazardous effort.  The Fire Company will continue this effort and is working closely with Village Maintenance, Security and Administration.
Good progress has been made, however, the logistics to get our volunteers out to the community and the Nor'easter scheduled to arrive today are just some of the challenges we are overcoming.
I thank all the volunteers, the Village staff and administration for their relentless efforts.
